For as long as he can remember, the boy has called him Uncle Tony. For as long as he can remember, Uncle Tony has been a part of his and his mother’s lives, popping up at times, drifting away at others, though never for as long as the father, never in a way that would make either of them think he had gone forever, always somewhere in the background, someone the son might bump into on a street corner in the town centre, or come home from school to find sitting at the kitchen table with the mother, the room filled with smoke despite the extractor fan running at full power, a toolbox on the chair next to him, the overflowing ashtrays in front of them attesting to the hours they have spent talking – about what, the child does not know – and the looks they give him as he stands in the doorway, schoolbag slung over his shoulder, the mother’s gaze as she is abruptly brought back to a reality she briefly managed to escape, waking from a dream, shaking herself, a little ashamed, busying herself clearing the table of the piled up ashtrays and coffee cups, and Tony’s gaze, his watery eyes, two limpid pools ringed with dark circles, his angular face invariably pale, consumed by some infinite sadness or some inexpressible regret that has been rekindled by the mere sight of the boy.
